Casillero del Diablo - Malbec

Vintage: 2008
Type: Malbec
Country: Chile

Malbec is a grape that I only approach when I'm feeling particularly gutsy or confident, so maybe the timing was just a bit off today. This Malbec offers up an amazing bouquet after swirling it around just a tiny touch. It tastes of various berries, is strongly oaked and offers up a vanilla-like finish. This wine should always be paired with food, as it would be too bold on its own. I wondered why this wine is so bold - it is probably because of the lack of rain and low altitude at which the grapes are grown in Chile. I reckon this will pair well with a rare and lightly seasoned steak.

Casillero del Diablo - Pinot Grigio

Vintage: 2008
Type: Pinot Grigio
Country: Chile - Casablanca Valley

DESCRIPTION

This is an easy-to-drink white that is perfect on hot, dry evenings, with or without a meal. We bought a case of this at Majestic (Callais) and have enjoyed a few bottles this summer already. It is refreshing and citrusy. Good lasting finish on the palate too!

Casillero del Diablo Shiraz

Vintage: 2007
Type: Shiraz
Country: Chile

Casillero del Diablo is a safe wine. Reasonably cheap (though the Cabernet is now quite expensive now that it has been recognised), this winery is reliable to produce a decent wine. The shiraz follows this trend, good flavour, good colour and good taste. I recommend it if you can find it for a good price.

Also the crest is pretty cool.

El Bosque

Vintage: 2006
Type: Carmenere
Country: Chile - Casablanca

I quite liked this wine. A straight Carmenere is a bit odd, but it worked quite well. Recommended.

Lovely wine with a great taste. Old vines performing wonderfully. I enjoyed this red especially the hint of coffee. You need to let it breathe a bit.

Curico Valley

Vintage: 2007
Type: Shiraz
Country: Chile

This fair trade wine was a gift for Christmas and it was not too bad. It was in a gift pack, which normally means to be wary, but it is from M&S so not to worry. I found it pleasant and easy to drink. Perfect with a meal.

Cerro Tololo

Vintage: 2005
Type: Shiraz
Country: Chile - Elqui Valley

Wow was this wine young. Even after having left it for several hours to breath, it was way to acidic and harsh. We set it aside for a day and the next evening it was tolerable. Perhaps with a few more years it will taste better, but if you like to enjoy your wine when you buy it: stay away!

Las Casas

Vintage: 2007
Type: Cabernet Sauvignon
Country: Chile - Maule Valley

I liked this wine, though I suspect that it needs a bit more age on it before it really shows what it can do. It will certainly need a while to breath if you try it now. You can find more about it here
