Ricossa - Barbaresco

Vintage: 2005
Type: Barbareesco
Country: Italy

The Barbaresco from Ricossa is an excellent, strong Italian wine. The Barbarescos tend to be a little lighter than their Barolo cousins and tend to mature quicker as well. This one is a fine example with dark cherry aroma and a great finish.

Ricossa-Barbera D'Asti

Vintage: 2007
Type: Barbera D'Asti
Country: Italy

Of all of the Ricossa that I tatsed at the Tesco Wine fair this year, the Barbera D'Asti was the one that I enjoyed the most. Again a strong bold wine with Dark Cherries and plum on the palate. The aroma is oak with a strong earthy smell. The wine is also acidic, but not to the point of detracting from its taste.

Ricossa - Barolo

Vintage: 2004
Type: Barolo
Country: Italy

If you've ever had a Barolo before, you will know that this is a full bodied wine that goes great with meat. The Ricossa Barolo is no different with a big bold flavour with plummy hints of aroma.

Madregale

Vintage: 2007
Type: Rosso
Country: Italy

This was a free bottle of wine that was given to me by a local butcher. It is an OK drinking wine, as expected. Nothing special, but if you can find it cheap then go for it.

Borgogno

Vintage: 2001
Type: Barolo
Country: Italy

An excellent strong Barolo. Great colour and fragrance, quite a bold flavour. Perfect with a steak (I wouldn't drink this on itself).

Il Papavero - Edizione Limitata

Vintage: 2006
Type: Primitivo
Country: Italy

Readers of the Blog will perhaps recognise this wine maker from a previous post, which covered their non-vintage red - not favourably. One may ask, why I decided to try their vintage Primitivo and the answer is that I didn't do it willingly. It was part of a mixed red case that overall was saved by this wine -- the Edizione Limitata is supurb. Great smell, excellent taste and an overall excellent wine. If you try Il Papavero, you need to try this bottle and leave the regular bottle alone.

Duca Petraccone

Vintage: 2005
Type: Primitivo
Country: Italy

For a wine that has won a lot of awards, this wine was quite disappointing. I found it adequate in practically every way with no real distinguishing traits. Perhaps the second bottle will yield better results.

Villa Farnese

Vintage: 2004
Type: Merlot
Country: Italy

This is a nice wine. I really like how well the flavours mix around, but are balanced. Recommended.

Legenda

Vintage: 2005
Type: Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot
Country: Italy - Vino da Tavola

Who knew that wine from Moldova could taste so good. The only thing I regret is that I only had one bottle.

Il Papavero

Vintage: Non Vintage
Type: Primitivo
Country: Italy - Vino da Tavola

Given the reviews I have read about this wine, I was expecting more. Overall not a great wine at all, though it is pretty cheap (You can have it for around £5 a bottle). It has won a bronze award from the Dallas Morning News Wine Competition, but is that really saying much?
